"Texas Hold 'Em" CD
Review
Anni Piper deals the listener a Royal Flush
in Spades with this CD... All I can say is "Deal Me In!"
...Anni is spot on with this new CD. The playing is superb. Her band...are
tight and professional, laying down solid rhythms and providing the
perfect foundation and framework for Anni's driving bass and sultry alto
voice. ...Texas Hold 'Em is a thoroughly enjoyable listen. Anni Piper's
vocals are clear and on point, her lyrics are clear, and the story lines
are filled with the twist of irony that only Anni can bring to blues. |

".... (Anni has) finally brought something new and refreshing to the "OZ"
Blues Industry. We've got some Female "Gems" in "OZ", but it is time for
someone to step up, show their wares & be proud of what they've put
together."

"Jailbait" CD Review from The Edmonton Sun (Canada)
Anni Piper's inner CD sleeve is
quite obviously designed -- successfully -- to make men drool over the
statuesque Australian Blues Mama. Then she starts singing, and all sorts
of other tingly things happen. Piper has the kind of voice that lulls men
to their doom. It's soft and sweet when it wants to be, scared and
vulnerable a moment later, then ripping through you like a razor.
In much the same vein as Janiva
Magness, Piper commands songs utterly. And so this disc comes down to a
matter of taste; you either like listening to a spectacular blues singer,
or you don't. As a debut, it's an astounding effort.
She's backed on this 10-track
effort by a sterling crew that never misses a beat. The title track is the
opener and it's smoldering. The follow-up "Live to Play" has too much to
live up to but Piper is back in fine form on the torchy "Two's Company."
The guitar solo on this one is from the house of Freddie King and a
welcome addition to the band's overall sound. "Come in my Kitchen" changes
things up again, and borrows a lick from the old Junior Wells classic "Hey
Lawdy Mama".
Every cut here is interesting,
at the least. And most just cook. This disc won't be easily found in
Canadian stores, but check out
www.annipiper.com instead.

"Anni's slightly gravely alto voice stands out with it's
clarity and pitch. Anni's bass playing is solid and in the groove… Anni
Piper has arrived, and you would do well to invite her in.” |

...she is one of the young, exciting new Blues talents emerging in
Australia... (and) is one of the premier Australian Blues songwriters,
able to capture the economy of language and wit of the Blues in her
lyrics.
